As soon as the doctor puts the wand on Shawna, the room fills with a whoop whoop noise. I realize that itâs the babyâs heartbeat. I have never heard a more perfect sound in my life. I grab my phone and record it.
âHeartbeat is strong. Letâs take a look at your baby, shall we?â The doctors says.
Watching the screen, I see the baby kicking, and immediately I look down at Shawnaâs stomach to see if I can see it move. Then I hear the doctor say, âCongratulations, you are having a boy.â
I can feel the tears pooling in my eyes as I continue looking at the screen. I hold my phone up to record our baby. We are having a boy. Iâm going to have a son. Holy shit, Iâm going to be a dad. I have so many things running through my head, and I have nowhere to begin. Well, thatâs not entirely true, I need to begin with Shawna.
I never thought once I found her, it would be like this. To think, she could have been raising this baby as a single mom, and I would have never known. Though eventually, we would have crossed paths at family functions.
What a mess, I think to myself as I rub my hands down my face and catch Savannah staring at me.
I try to smile, but it must come across as a grimace because she rolls her eyes. I turn mine back to the screen watching my son snuggled safely in the womb of his mother. He places his thumb in his mouth and looks to be settling in. I look over at Shawna and see the stream of tears falling from her eyes as she watches our son on the screen.
The doctor hits a button, turns the machine off, then wipes the gel from Shawnaâs stomach.
âEverything is progressing very well, Shawna. I will see you back in four weeks,â the doctor says.
âThank you, Dr. Rhoades,â Shawna says, wiping her face as the doctor hands her the pictures of our baby.
The doctor leaves the room, and Savannah helps Shawna off the bed. When she looks up, she sees me. The shocked look in her eyes is back, almost like she forgot I was here. Well, I wonât let her forget about me anymore.
Iâm here, and Iâm not going anywhere. I donât know how we are going to do this yet, but what I do know is Iâm not leaving whatâs mine and Shawna and our son are absolutely mine. I just have to find a way to make her see that.
âDo you still want to go shopping for baby things?â Savannah asks Shawna while looking back and forth between the two of us.
âNo, I think Iâm ready to go home,â Shawna says, not taking her eyes off me, and I nod my head, so she understands I will be there with her.
I watch her shoulders sag in defeat, and she sighs before saying, âLetâs head to the house then.â
âYou two can drop me off at home, and then you can talk,â Savannah pipes in.
